Subspecies
Molecular-genetic evidence indicates that this genus may form a monophyletic group with Piranga and Habia, and that all three are more closely related to cardinals (Cardinalidae) than to true tanagers. This species often treated as conspecific with Chlorothraupis frenata, the two being morphologically very similar. Further investigation desirable.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • carmioli (Lawrence, 1868)   -  Caribbean slope and lowlands and very locally on Pacific slope at low passes from eastern Nicaragua south to extreme north-western Panama (vicinity of Almirante Bay).
  • magnirostris Griscom, 1927   -  Western Panama (both slopes in Veraguas).
  • lutescens Griscom, 1927   -  From central Panama (Coclé and Colon locally east to San Blas and north-western Darién, generally northern and east of valleys of R Chepo and R Chucunaque, and on Cerro Tacarcuna) and adjacent extreme north-western Colombia (slopes of Cerro Tacarcuna, in Chocó).
  • frenata von Berlepsch, 1907   -  Tropical southern Colombia to north-western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-lored Tanager (Habia frenata).
