Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- obscuriceps Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953 - Sierra de Perijá, on Colombia-Venezuela border.
- fulviceps Cabanis, 1851 - Mountains of northern Venezuela (Carabobo east to Miranda; north-eastern Anzoátegui, western Sucre and northern Monagas).
- meridensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1962 - Andes of Mérida and northern Táchira, in western Venezuela.
- intensa Todd, 1917 - Eastern slope of eastern Andes in northern Colombia (Norte de Santander).
