Subspecies
Placement of genus in present family has been questioned; in particular, recent research indicates that it appears not to form part of a monophyletic parulid family, and a more recent study suggests that it may belong with the cardinals (Cardinalidae). This species forms a superspecies with Red-breasted Chat (Granatellus venustus) and Rose-breasted Chat (Granatellus pelzelni).
Proposed subspecies griscomi (described from Cobán, in central Guatemala), is synonymized with boucardi.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
sallaei Bonaparte, 1856 - Atlantic slope of southern Mexico (southern Veracruz, Tabasco, eastern Oaxaca and northern Chiapas).
boucardi Ridgway, 1885 - Yucatán Peninsula south to central Guatemala and Belize.
