Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 2,500 - 3,500 m, occasionally down to 1,500 m.
Costa Rica, Panama.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pirre Warbler (Basileuterus ignotus), and sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- melanogenys Baird, 1865 - Central and southern Costa Rica.
- eximius Nelson, 1912 - Western Panama in vicinity of Boquette (Chiriquí).
- bensoni Griscom, 1927 - Western Panama in vicinity of Chitrá (Veraguas).
