Closely related to and may form a superspecies with Two-banded Warbler (Myiothlypis bivittata). They are separated altitudinally in small area of southern Peru where ranges overlap. Subspecies geographically discrete and have recently been treated by some authors as two distinct species, based primarily on significant differences in song.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chlorophrys (Tschudi, 1844) - Andes of south-western Colombia and western Ecuador (south to Chimborazo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Choco Warbler (Myiothlypis chlorophrys).
chrysogaster (Tschudi, 1844) - Eastern slope of Andes in central and southern Peru and western Bolivia.
