Subspecies
Geographical variation largely clinal, e.g. colour of underparts gradually changing from dark red in north to yellow in South America and amount of black on face decreasing from north to south. Recently suggested by some authors that ballux and subsimillis be synonymized with verticalis.
The following 12 subspecies are recognised:
miniatus (Swainson, 1827) - Mexico from southern Sonora, south-western Chihuahua and San Luis Potosí south to southern Oaxaca.
molochinus Wetmore, 1942 - Sierra de Tuxtla, in south-eastern Veracruz (eastern Mexico).
intermedius (Hartlaub, 1852) - Southern Mexico (extreme eastern Oaxaca, northern and eastern Chiapas) and eastern Guatemala (Neast of Pacific cordillera).
hellmayri van Rossem, 1936 - Pacific cordillera from southern Guatemala south to south-western El Salvador.
connectens Dickey & van Rossem, 1928 - El Salvador and Honduras south to north-central Nicaragua.
comptus Wetmore, 1944 - Western and central Costa Rica.
aurantiacus (Baird, SF, 1865) - Eastern Costa Rica and western Panama.
ballux Wetmore & Phelps, 1944 - South-eastern Panama, northern Colombia (excluding Santa Marta Mts) and western Venezuela (east to Loja) south through Colombian Andes to northern Ecuador.
sanctaemartae Zimmer, JT, 1949 - Santa Marta Mts (northern Colombia).
pallidiventris (Chapman, 1899) - Northern Venezuela from Falcón east to Sucre and Monagas.
subsimillis J. T. Zimmer, 1949 - Western Andes in south-western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
verticalis (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Eastern Andes from southern Ecuador south to central Bolivia. Also tepuis of southern Venezuela, northern Guyana and northern Brazil.
