Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pink-headed Warbler (Cardellina versicolor) and has been considered conspecific, but differs in plumage (especially head pattern) and no indication of increased similarity in south of range, where geographically closest.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
melanauris (Moore, RT, 1937) - North-western Mexico in Sierra Madre Occidental from south-western Chihuahua south to northern Nayarit.
rubra (Swainson, 1827) - Central and western Mexico (Jalisco south-east to northern Oaxaca).
