Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, temperate forest.

Range (Guide)
Aruba, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Canada (B) (P), Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).

Vagrant to Antigua And Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, St Kitts And Nevis, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), St Vincent and The Grenadines, United Kingdom.

Breeds in south-eastern Canada (extreme south-eastern Ontario) and in eastern USA from southern Great Lakes and southern New England southern patchily to eastern Oklahoma, Gulf of Mexico coast and northern Florida. Migrates to Mexico and Central America (primarily in east) and Caribbean.

Relationship with congeners not clear. Recent study suggests that this species may be closer to Dendroica.
