Subspecies
Subspecies geographically discrete; chiriquensis sometimes considered a separate species, and recently suggested, on basis of mitochondrial DNA, to be closer to G. subflava than to other forms currently included herein. In one recent study, nominate subspecies, chiriquensis, auricularis and velata found to be genetically distinct from one another; vocal differences also apparent. They may be better treated as four separate species, with peruviana then a subspecies of auricularis; some authors have suggested that peruviana differs from auricularis in its song, and that it, too, may merit elevation to species rank. Further research is required.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
chiriquensis (Gmelin, 1789) - Southern Costa Rica and adjacent south-western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chiriqui Yellowthroat (Geothlypis chiriquensis).
aequinoctialis (Gmelin, 1789) - Northern Colombia and Venezuela south to northern Amazonian Brazil. Also Trinidad.
auricularis Salvin, 1883 - Western Ecuador, western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-lored Yellowthroat (Geothlypis auricularis).
peruviana Taczanowski, 1884 - Upper Marañón Valley, in north-western Peru (probably also in adjacent south-eastern Ecuador). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-lored Yellowthroat (Geothlypis auricularis). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Black-lored Yellowthroat (Geothlypis auricularis).
velata (Vieillot, 1809) - South-eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and southern Amazonian Brazil to Argentina and Uruguay. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Yellowthroat (Geothlypis velata).
