Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Belding's Yellowthroat (Geothlypis beldingi) and Bahama Yellowthroat (Geothlypis rostrata), presumably also including Altamira Yellowthroat (Geothlypis flavovelata) and all have sometimes been regarded as conspecific. Has hybridized with Mourning Warbler (Geothlypis philadelphia). Subspecies chapalensis sometimes considered to represent a separate species. Geographical variation complex within huge range. Up to 29 or more subspecies have been described, many of these too poorly differentiated to warrant recognition. Recent work involving mitochondrial DNA suggests western and eastern groupings of present species may be closer to other congeners than to each other. Further study is required.

Proposed subspecies yukonicola (described from Jarvis River, in south-western Yukon) and brachidactylus (described from "northern provinces" of USA) sometimes regarded as worthy of recognition, but presently treated as synonyms of, respectively, campicola and nominate. In Mexico, riparia (described from Tesia, on R Mayo, in southern Sonora) synonymized with chryseola, but possibly merits recognition. Type locality previously listed as Maryland, but this was based on reference to a 1702 publication now shown to apply instead to Yellow-throated Warbler (Setophaga dominica).

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • arizela Oberholser, 1899   -  Breeds Pacific coastal region from extreme south-eastern Alaska south to central California; migrates to area from California south to north-western Mexico (Baja California and northern Sonora).
  • sinuosa Grinnell, 1901   -  Breeds San Francisco Bay area of California; in winter locally also along California coast, mainly to south of the bay.
  • scirpicola Grinnell, 1901   -  Extreme south-western USA and adjacent north-western Mexico (northern Baja California and extreme north-western Sonora).
  • campicola Behle & Aldrich, 1947   -  Breeds interior north-western North America from south-western Canada (southern Yukon east to western Ontario) southern in USA to Idaho and north-western Nebraska; migrates to south-western USA and northern Mexico, at least.
  • occidentalis Brewster, 1883   -  Breeds in interior south-western USA (southern from eastern Oregon and Kansas). Winters south-western USA, western Mexico and Guatemala.
  • chryseola van Rossem, 1930   -  South-western USA (southern Arizona east to western Texas) and northern Mexico (south to southern Sonora and Durango). Non-breeding also slightly farther south.
  • trichas (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Breeds south-eastern Canada (west-central Ontario east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) and southern in USA to eastern Texas and south-eastern Virginia (excluding south-eastern coastal regions); migrates to wintering area from southern USA south to Costa Rica (casually south to adjacent north-western South America) and Caribbean.
  • typhicola Burleigh, 1934   -  Breeds south-eastern USA coastal belt north of Florida and Gulf of Mexico coast. Non-breeding also around Gulf coast south to eastern Mexico (Veracruz).
  • insperata van Tyne, 1933   -  Southern Texas (lower Rio Grande Valley south of Brownsville).
  • ignota Chapman, 1890   -  Coastal plain of southern USA (south-eastern Louisiana east to Florida).
  • modesta Nelson, 1900   -  Western coast of Mexico from central Sonora south to Colima.
  • melanops Baird, SF, 1865   -  Central Mexico from Zacatecas and northern Jalisco east to Veracruz and Oaxaca.
