(Gmelin, 1789)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical mangroves, temperate forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m, occasionally up to 2,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (NB), Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).

Vagrant to Antigua And Barbuda, Guadeloupe, St Pierre and Miquelon (P).

Breeds over much of eastern USA south of Great Lakes (excluding Florida Peninsula and much of southern Atlantic coastal plain); distribution centred around Appalachians and adjacent areas. Migrates to lowlands of Middle America from southern and eastern Mexico south to western Panama, and Caribbean.

Estimated population is 800,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus sometimes merged with Lymnothlypis but, despite superficial similarities, the two are apparently not closely related. Has been suggested that genus may be closest to Vermivora.
