Status NT
Habitat loss and degradation on the wintering ground is probably the main threat. Fire suppression and brood-parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) may also be threats.

Relationships within genus unclear. Possible hybrid between this species and Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca) reported from Hispaniola.
