Peru.

Southern Jun��n and northern Huancavelica (just northern and south of R Mantaro), in south-central Peru.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction through burning is the main threat.

Originally described under name Atlapetes melanops, but this name is preoccupied.

Similar Species
Allopatric Apurimac Brush-finch (Atlapetes forbesi) is pure grey, has ruddier head and reduced black around eyes.
