Subspecies
Has been suggested as forming a superspecies with Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus), Saffron-billed Sparrow (Arremon flavirostris), Orange-billed Sparrow (Arremon aurantiirostris) and Black-capped Sparrow (Arremon abeillei).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- schlegeli Bonaparte, 1851 - Caribbean coast of Colombia (except Guajira Peninsula) and Venezuela, and Venezuelan Andes.
- fratruelis Wetmore, 1946 - Serranía de Macuira (on Guajira Peninsula), in northern Colombia.
- canidorsum Zimmer, JT, 1941 - Western slope of eastern Andes in Santander, in northern Colombia.
