Subspecies
Relationships of this species unclear. Generally placed close to Aimophila, but molecular studies suggest that it is part of a group that also contains Melospiza, Passerculus, Xenospiza, Pooecetes, and Henslow's Sparrow (Passerculus henslowii) and Baird's Sparrow (Passerculus bairdii). Subspecies poorly differentiated. Specimens from Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Michoacán reported as being intermediate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • palliatus (van Rossem, 1938)   -  Western Mexico in Sierra Madre Occidental from eastern Sonora and south-western Chihuahua south through eastern Sinaloa and western Durango to Nayarit and western Zacatecas.
  • superciliosus (Swainson, 1838)   -  Southern part of central plateau of Mexico in Jalisco, Aguascalientes and Guanajuato east to Tlaxcala and west-central Veracruz, south to Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla and central Oaxaca.
