Habitat
Temperate grassland and forest. From 1,100 - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Bahamas, Belize, Canada (B), Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B).

Vagrant to Bermuda, Jamaica, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), United Kingdom.

Rarity Status

Estimated population is 9,900,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Probably close to Calamospiza and Amphispiza. Geographical variation largely clinal; subspecies poorly differentiated.

Proposed subspecies quillini (described from Cotulla, Texas) included within strigatus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • strigatus Swainson, 1827   -  Breeds in southern Canada from southern interior British Columbia and south-eastern Alberta east to southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba, and western USA from Oregon east to the Dakotas and south to southern California, central Nevada and southern Arizona (Chiricahua Mts), south to northern Mexico (northern Sonora east to Coahuila, south to Zacatecas, Nuevo León and western Tamaulipas). Non-breeding from southern edge of breeding range south to southern Louisiana and Mexico (southern, except Yucatán Peninsula and adjacent lowlands, to southern Baja California, Veracruz and Chiapas).
  • grammacus (Say, 1823)   -  Breeds from Minnesota and central Wisconsin south to Texas, east to Ohio, Mississippi Valley and Louisiana. Non-breeding from central Texas and southern Louisiana south through central Mexico to Guerrero and Oaxaca.
