Central Mexico, where now restricted to two isolated localities: Distrito Federal (centred around La Cima and Milpa Alta, near Mexico City); and southern Durango (Ejido Ojo de Aguaâ€"El Cazador).

Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture, burning, are the main threats.

Voice
Song is a varied series (7-12, occasionally as few as four) of 'chip' notes with buzzes. Nasal 'nyew' or thin 'sii' call, very similar to that of Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia).

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes suggested as being close to Ammodramus, and genus sometimes subsumed in latter. However, song and limited molecular work, suggest close affinity with Melospiza, and may be better placed within that genus.
Similar Species
Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) which is larger and less rufous, with a longer round-tipped tail (notched in Xenospiza), and lacks the bright yellow wing bend of this species.
