Breeds in Canada from south-central Mackenzie (in Northwest Territories), Peace R lowlands of north-eastern British Columbia and throughout lowlands of Alberta east to central Manitoba, northern and eastern Ontario and locally southern Quebec, southern in USA to north-western Montana, northern South Dakota, southern Minnesota and northern Michigan. Non-breeding southern USA from central Kansas, north-western Arkansas, southern Georgia and coastal South Carolina south to Gulf Coast (Texas east to western Florida).

Genus, as currently delimited, is probably polyphyletic. Molecular studies suggest that present species is in a clade with Seaside Sparrow (Ammospiza maritima), Nelson's Sparrow (Ammospiza nelsoni) and Sharp-tailed Sparrow (Ammospiza caudacuta). Has hybridized with Nelson's Sparrow (Ammospiza nelsoni).
