Habitat
Remote `ohi`a forest. From 1,400 - 2,100 m.

Upper Hanawi watershed, in eastern Maui, in Hawaiian Is.

Population
Estimated population is <50 (2010) and decreasing.
Status PE
Habitat destruction and modification, and the rapid spread of disease-carrying mosquitoes in the lowlands are possibly the main threats.

Food
Primarily snails, insects, and spiders, and occasionally fruit.
Voice
Song is a quiet jumble of chittering notes. Call is a loud chirk, often in short series.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Affiliation uncertain and has been questioned. Membership of honeycreeper clade supported by DNA analysis. Apparently a basal offshoot of main evolutionary line.
