Habitat
Dense, wet `ohi`a forest and the higher parts of mesic koa-`ohi`a forest. On Maui, all recent sightings were between 1,450 and 2,000 m, mostly at the lower end of that range. On Kaua`i, the Koai`e Valley (where it was seen in 1995) is at 1,000 - 1,300 m.

Population
Estimated population is <50 (2010).
Status EX
Habitat destruction and degradation through cattle ranching and introduced ungulates, is the main threat.

Wood-borers, spiders and beetles.
Subspecies
Genus sometimes listed as Heterorhynchus, but this name is an objective synonym of current genus name. It is unclear which name published earlier, and current genus name was adopted using Principle of First Reviser. Subspecies affinis and hanapepe often considered distinct species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- lucidus ! Lichtenstein, 1839 - Maui, Kauai, in Hawaiian Is. Possibly extinct.
- affinis Rothschild, 1893 - Maui, in Hawaiian Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Maui Nukupuu (Hemignathus affinis).
- hanapepe S. B. Wilson, 1889 - Kauai, in Hawaiian Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kauai Nukupuu (Hemignathus hanapepe).
