Subspecies
Geographical variation slight and clinal, with a certain increase in size and in plumage darkness moving from west to east. Birds from Kashka-suu, in northern Kyrgyzstan, described as subspecies merzbacheri, but differences from nominate considered trivial and synonymized with latter.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
speculigerus (von Brandt, JF, 1841) - Northern and north-eastern Iran and southern Turkmenistan east to north-western and east-central Afghanistan and western Pakistan (Baluchistan).
carnipes (Hodgson, 1836) - Eastern and south-eastern Kazakhstan (Dzhungarian Alatau and Tien Shan) south to eastern Uzbekistan, north-eastern Afghanistan and Tajikistan, west, central and southern China (south-western Xinjiang; southern Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia and north-eastern Qinghai south to south-eastern Xizang, north-western Yunnan, southern Sichuan and southern Shaanxi), and Himalayas from northern Pakistan east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh) and northern Myanmar.
