Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 1,975 - 4,200 m, occasionally down to 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)

Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Myanmar, Nepal.

Breeds in Himalayas from central Nepal east to northern Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh), southern and south-western China (southern and south-eastern Xixang east to southern Sichuan and north-western Yunnan) and northern Myanmar. Winters also southern Bhutan and north-eastern India (southern Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Has sometimes been placed in genus Pinicola, but probably more closely related to Carpodacus. Further study is required.
