Subspecies
Subspecies intergrade widely in overlap areas. Proposed subspecies szetchuanus (described from northern Sichuan), on average only slightly darker than longirostris, is synonymized with latter.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
humii (Sharpe, 1888) - South-eastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai Mts) south to Himalayas of northern Pakistan, Ladakh and northern India (Uttarakhand).
kilianensis Vaurie, 1956 - Extreme western China (mountains at western and southern fringe of Tarim Basin, in western Xinjiang) south to north-eastern Ladakh.
puniceus Blyth, 1845 - Central and eastern Himalayas from Nepal east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh) and south-western China (southern Xizang).
longirostris (Przewalski, 1876) - Central China (eastern Qinghai east to southern Gansu and northern and western Sichuan).
sikangensis Vaurie, 1956 - Central-southern China (south-western Sichuan and north-western Yunnan).
