Spot-winged Rosefinch (Carpodacus rodopeplus) [XC812431]

Subspecies
Name sometimes spelt, erroneously, as "rhodopeplus". Has been suggested that subspecies verreauxii might represent a separate species, on basis of size, bill size, plumage and vocalizations; further research, including analysis of mitochondrial DNA, required before such treatment considered justified.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rodopeplus (Vigors, 1831) - Himalayas of northern India (western Uttarakhand), Nepal and south-western China (southern Xizang).
verreauxii (David and Oustalet, 1877) - Southern China (north-eastern Yunnan and south-western Sichuan) and north-eastern Myanmar. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sharpe's Rosefinch (Carpodacus verreauxii).
