Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
sibiricus (Pallas, 1773) - Breeds south-western and south-central Siberia east to middle R Amur, south to north-eastern Kazakhstan, northern Mongolia and north-western and north-eastern China (north-western Xinjiang; north-western Inner Mongolia). Winters south-central and south-eastern Russia, eastern Kazakhstan (Tarbagatay, Dzhungarian Alatau, eastern Tien Shan) and north-western and north-central China.
ussuriensis (Buturlin, 1915) - Breeds Russian Far East (middle R Amur east to Ussuriland) and north-eastern China (Heilongjiang and Jilin). Winters in Korea and eastern China (Liaoning south to Hebei and Shanxi, also southern Gansu).
sanguinolentus (Temminck & Schlegel, 1848) - Breeds Sakhalin I, southern Kurils and northern Japan (Hokkaido, northern Honshu). Winters central and southern Japan.
lepidus (David & Oustalet, 1877) - Central China ( eastern Xizang east to southern Shaanxi and south-western Shanxi).
henrici (Oustalet, 1892) - Southern China (south-eastern Xizang, northern Sichuan and western and north-western Yunnan).
