Subspecies
Has been thought possibly to form a superspecies with Grey-crowned Rosy-Finch (Leucosticte tephrocotis), Black Rosy-finch (Leucosticte atrata) and Brown-capped Rosy-finch (Leucosticte australis), and all are often treated as conspecific. Recent analysis of mitochondrial DNA indicates close genetic similarity among them all.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • arctoa (Pallas, 1811)   -  Breeds in south-central Russian Siberia (C, southern and south-eastern Altai, western Sayan Mts, Tannu Ola Mts), north-eastern Kazakhstan and north-western Mongolia. Winters (possibly breeds) north-western China (north-western Xinjiang).
  • cognata (Madarász, 1909)   -  Siberia (eastern Sayan east to central Baikal Mts) and northern Mongolia.
  • sushkini Stegmann, 1932   -  Khangai (Hangayn) Mts, in west-central Mongolia.
  • gigliolii Salvadori, 1869   -  South-eastern Siberia from northern Baikal Mts east to western Stanovoy Mts (south-western Yakutia).
  • brunneonucha (von Brandt, JF, 1842)   -  Breeds in Russian Far East and north-eastern Siberia (from Lena delta south to central Stanovoy Mts, east to Anadyr Range, southern Chukotskiy Peninsula, Koryak Mts, Kamchatka and Kuril Is) and south to north-eastern China (north-eastern Inner Mongolia and western Heilongjiang). Non-breeding also north-eastern China (Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang south to Hebei), Korea and Japan (south to central Honshu).
