Subspecies
Proposed subspecies audreyana (described from Yabuk, on Zemu Glacier, in northern Sikkim) and, in China, walteri (from Songpan, in northern Sichuan) and intermedia (from Burhan Budai Shan, in Qinghai) synonymized with haematopygia.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • margaritacea (Madarász, 1904)   -  North-eastern Kazakhstan (Tarbagatay and Altai Mts), southern Russia (Altai, western Tuva and western Sayan Mts), north-western China (northern Xinjiang) and western Mongolia.
  • brandti Bonaparte, 1851   -  Kyrgyzstan, south-eastern Kazakhstan (Dzhungarian Alatau and Tien Shan) and western China (western and central Xinjiang). Non-breeding also northern Pakistan.
  • pamirensis Severtsov, 1883   -  Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan (Pamir-Alai Mts and southern Tien Shan), north-eastern Afghanistan and western China (south-western Xinjiang). Non-breeding also northern Pakistan.
  • pallidior Bianchi, 1908   -  Western and central China (Kunlun Mts east to northern Qinghai). Non-breeding east to north-western Gansu.
  • haematopygia (Gould, 1851)   -  South-western China (Xizang, Qinghai and north-western Gansu south to western Sichuan and northern Yunnan), Karakoram Mts and Himalayas east to north-eastern Nepal and India (Sikkim).
  • intermedia Stegmann, 1932   -  Central China.
  • walteri (Hartert, 1904)   -  Eastern Tibet and south-western China.
