Afghanistan (B) (NB), Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Kazakhstan (B), Kyrgyzstan (B) (NB), Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia (Asian), Russia (Central Asian) (B) (NB), Tajikistan (B), Turkmenistan.

Subspecies
Geographical variation somewhat clinal. Subspecies weakly differentiated.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • altaica (Eversmann, 1848)   -  Southern Russia (central and south-eastern Altai east to southern Baikal area) and western Mongolia southern in mountains to eastern and southern Kazakhstan (Tien Shan), north-western China (north-western Xinjiang south to north-western Xizang), western and northern Tajikistan and north-eastern Afghanistan, thence eastern in north-western Himalayas of northern Pakistan and northern India (Uttarakhand).
  • nemoricola (Hodgson, 1836)   -  Tibetan Plateau east to central and southern China (eastern Qinghai, Gansu, southern Shaanxi, western Sichuan and north-western Yunnan), and Himalayas from central Nepal east to Bhutan. Non-breeding visitor north-eastern Myanmar.
