Subspecies
Geographical variation slight and clinal. Some subspecies perhaps untenable.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallidus (Mearns, 1890)   -  Southern Canada (south-central British Columbia east to western Ontario) and central and west-central USA (eastern from to eastern Oregon, south to north-western Colorado). Winters also from northern California south to north-central Mexico.
  • jewetti van Rossem, 1943   -  Extreme south-western Canada (south-western British Columbia) southern in western USA to central California.
  • salicamans Grinnell, 1897   -  South-western USA (western Sierra Nevada, in California). Winters east to Mohave and Colorado Deserts and south to north-western Mexico (northern Baja California).
  • tristis (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  South-eastern Canada (eastern from Ontario) and central and eastern USA (eastern from south-eastern Minnesota, south to north-eastern Texas and northern South Carolina). Winters southern and south-eastern USA south to central Mexico.
