Subspecies
Taxonomic identity of population in north-central Sulawesi unknown. Further research required.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • vanderbilti (Meyer de Schauensee, 1939)   -  Northern Sumatra (Mt Leuser area).
  • estherae (Finsch, 1902)   -  Western Java (Mt Pangrango).
  • orientalis Chasen, 1940   -  Eastern Java (Tengger Mts and western Yang).
  • mindanensis (Ripley & Rabor, 1961)   -  Central Mindanao (Mt Kitanglad and Mt Apo), in southern Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mindanao Serin (Chrysocorythus mindanensis).
  • renatae (Schuchmann & Wolters, 1982)   -  Mt Rantekombola, in southern Sulawesi.
  • chaseni (Kinzelbach, Dickinson & Somadikarta, 2009)   -  Tengger Mountains (s-central Java).
