Proposed subspecies hewitti, described from Kleinpoort farm (Albany, in Cape Province), in South Africa, synonymized with nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
crocopygia (Sharpe, 1871) - Northern Namibia and south-western Angola.
sordahlae (Friedmann, 1932) - Southern Namibia and north-western South Africa (western northern Cape).
orangensis Roberts, 1937 - Northern South Africa (southern North West Province and western Free State).
albogularis (Smith, 1833) - Coastal western and south-western South Africa (east to central eastern Cape).
