Formerly considered a subspecies of Village Indigobird (Vidua chalybeata). Has been treated as conspecific with Dusky Indigobird (Vidua funerea). Described taxon Dusky Indigobird (Vidua funerea), subspecies lusituensis (from R Lusitu, in eastern Zimbabwe) is a synonym of present species.
