Locally common. Nomadic, frequently coastal areas in the dry season and inland during the wet.
Habitat
Grasslands bordering watercourses and open areas.
Australia (B).
Northern Australia, from about Derby, WA across North Territory, sporadically east to about Croydon, Qld.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status LC
An increase in the incidence of airsac mites and changes to the fire regime appear to be the main threats.

Seeds of grasses and other plants. Also insects during the breeding season.

Breeding Season (Guide )
December - March but sometimes as late as April or May.
Nest
Large, bottle-shpaed, composed of dried grass-stems, in a tussock of grass.
Eggs (Guide )
4 - 6; plain white; oval; about 16 x 11 mm. Incubation: by both sexes.
Young
Fed by both sexes by regurgitation. Fledge in about 21 - 24 days. Liable to fledge prematurely (16 - 18 days) if disturbed.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Immatures of other Mannikins which have black legs rather than dull pink.
