Abundance (Guide)
LC

Scare but locally abundant. Nomadic, frequently coastal areas in the dry season and inland during the wet.

Habitat
Chiefly tall cane-grass on the margins of swamps and rivers.

Australia (B).

North-eastern Western Australia (eastern Kimberley) and north-western Northern Territory (northern and western Top End east, discontinuously, to eastern Alligator R and Elsey National Park).
 
North-western Australia and North Territory.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 (2010).

Status LC
Reasons for decline not known. Degradation of habitat by stock is a possible threat.

Probably secure.

Habits
In pairs or flocks, often in the company of, and inter-breeding with, Chestnut-breasted Munia (Lonchura castaneothorax).

Food
Seeds of grasses. During the breeding season also insects.

Voice
Bell-like tinkling.

Nest
Large, bottle-shaped, composed of dried grasses lined with finer grasses and a few feathers, in tall grass or a low bush.

Eggs (Guide)
4 or 5; white; oval; about 17 x 12 mm. Incubation: about 12 - 13 days; by both sexes.

Young
Fledge in about 20 - 22 days.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Hybridizes with Chestnut-breasted Munia (Lonchura castaneothorax).

Similar Species
Similar to vagrant Pale-headed Munia (Lonchura pallida) in all plumages and in brief glympses only with Chestnut-breasted Munia (Lonchura castaneothorax).
