Subspecies
Closely related to Black Mannikin (Lonchura stygia) and Hooded Mannikin (Lonchura spectabilis). Has apparently hybridized with Chestnut-breasted Munia (Lonchura castaneothorax) in lowlands near Port Moresby.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
kumusii (Hartert, 1911) - Northern coast of south-eastern New Guinea.
scratchleyana (Sharpe, 1898) - Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea.
caniceps (Salvadori, 1876) - Southern coast of south-eastern New Guinea.
