Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], C�te dIvoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland (B), Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Namibia.

Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia east, very patchily, to Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, southern Sudan and western Ethiopia, south to Gabon, northern and south-western Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique and eastern South Africa.

Birds from Dondo Forest, in southern Mozambique, described as subspecies pica, but appear to differ little from those elsewhere in species' range.
