Subspecies
Sometimes separated in a monotypic genus, Reichenowia.
Proposed subspecies malayana (described from Cameron Highlands, in Peninsular Malaysia) is synonymized with borneensis, ernstmayri (from Wawa Karaeng, Lompobattang, in south-western Sulawesi) with microrhyncha, and obscura (from Sita, in western Flores) with intermedia.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
borneensis (Sharpe, 1889) - Peninsular Malaysia (Cameron Highlands) and northern Borneo.
brunneiventris (Ogilvie-Grant, 1894) - Northern Philippine Is (Luzon and Mindoro).
hyperythra (Reichenbach, 1863) - Java.
microrhyncha (Stresemann, 1931) - Sulawesi.
intermedia (Hartert, 1896) - Western Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores).
malayana (Robinson, 1928) - Mountains of Malay Peninsula.
Similar Species
Pin-tailed Parrotfinch (Erythrura prasina) which has a longer, pointed, red tail and blue face.
