Subspecies
Recent studies of mitochondrial phylogeny indicate that this species is sister to Arabian Waxbill (Estrilda rufibarba).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- rhodopyga Sundevall, 1850 - Eastern Sudan, western Eritrea, north-eastern Ethiopia and north-western Somalia.
- centralis Kothe, 1911 - South-eastern Sudan, Ethiopia (except north-east), north-eastern DRCongo, Uganda, Kenya, southern Somalia, Tanzania and northern Malawi.
