Subspecies
No subspecies.
May form a superspecies with Black-bellied Seedcracker (Pyrenestes ostrinus) and Crimson Seedcracker (Pyrenestes sanguineus), and all sometimes treated as conspecific. Thick-billed specimen from northern Mozambique (Elephant Bend, c. 100 km Wnorth-west of Mocuba) described as a new species, Pyrenestes vincenti, in 1955, and similar one from northern Malawi (Kabunduli) was thought to belong to same new species. However, both individuals now considered to represent size variants of present species.
