Subspecies
Poorly differentiated subspecies saturatior sometimes synonymized with brunnescens.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • bicolor (Hartlaub, 1844)   -  Western Gambia, south-western Senegal (Casamance), Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, south-western Mali, eastern Sierra Leone and Liberia east to Togo.
  • brunnescens Reichenow, 1902   -  Southern Nigeria, Príncipe I, central and southern Cameroon and southern Central African Republic south to northern Angola and DRCongo (from lower R Congo east to Upper Uele, central Ituri, Kasai and Manyema).
  • saturatior Reichenow, 1902   -  Albertine Rift in north-eastern DRCongo and Uganda.
