Vagrant to Mali.

Subspecies
In captivity, has hybridized with Red-collared Widowbird (Euplectes ardens) and Fan-tailed Widowbird (Euplectes axillaris).

Proposed subspecies intermedius (described from eastern shore of L Tanganyika) synonymized with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • macroura (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, extreme southern Mali, Burkina Faso, extreme south-western Niger, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria east, discontinuously, to Cameroon, south-western Chad, Central African Republic and southern Sudan, south to Gabon, PRCongo, northern Angola, DRCongo, Uganda, south-western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and extreme western Mozambique.
  • macrocercus (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823)   -  Highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia.
  • conradsi (Berger, 1908)   -  Ukerewe I, in L Victoria.
