Habitat
Subtropical and tropical seasonally wet / flooded grassland. From sea-level - 1,800 m.
Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Mali.

Subspecies
In captivity, has hybridized with Red-collared Widowbird (Euplectes ardens) and Fan-tailed Widowbird (Euplectes axillaris).
Proposed subspecies intermedius (described from eastern shore of L Tanganyika) synonymized with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- macroura (Gmelin, 1789) - Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, extreme southern Mali, Burkina Faso, extreme south-western Niger, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria east, discontinuously, to Cameroon, south-western Chad, Central African Republic and southern Sudan, south to Gabon, PRCongo, northern Angola, DRCongo, Uganda, south-western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and extreme western Mozambique.
- macrocercus (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823) - Highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia.
- conradsi (Berger, 1908) - Ukerewe I, in L Victoria.
