Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Red-headed Quelea (Quelea erythrops) in a separate genus, Queleopsis.
Proposed subspecies rhodesiae (described from eastern Zambia) alleged to have brown on nape more extensive, but individual variation occurs throughout species' range.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cardinalis (Hartlaub, 1880) - Southern South Sudan, north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and western Kenya south to central and eastern Zambia and central Malawi; rare nonbreeding visitor to Ethiopia.
rhodesiae Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1944 - South-eastern Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.
