Extreme eastern Sierra Leone (Gola Forest) and adjacent western Liberia; eastern Liberia and adjacent western Ivory Coast, and recently located in extreme south-eastern Guinea.

Voice
Song phrases or calls by males include a series of chattering sounds followed by a wheezing phrase lasting about three seconds 'cheg chig cheg cheg chega zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz', similar to Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus). Females' song is similar, 'cheg cheg chig chag chaaag cheg chiiig'.

Sometimes referred to as Malimbus golensis, but this is a nomen nudum. Has been thought to form a superspecies with Rachel's Malimbe (Malimbus racheliae).
