Southern Sudan, Uganda, western Kenya, north, central and eastern Tanzania and south-eastern Burundi. Introduced in United Arab Emirates.

Molecular data suggest that closest relative is Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti). May hybridize with Northern Brown-throated Weaver (Ploceus castanops) in Uganda.
