Habitat
Papyrus, reedbeds and shrubbery overhanging water. Around 1,750 m.
Botswana, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status LC
Wetland habitat destruction is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- castaneigula (Cabanis, 1884) - Western Zambia, north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi region), northern Botswana and extreme western Zimbabwe.
- xanthopterus (Finsch & Hartlaub, 1870) - South-western Tanzania, Malawi, northern and central Mozambique and extreme north-eastern Zimbabwe.
- marleyi (Roberts, 1929) - Southern Mozambique (south of R Save) and coastal north-eastern South Africa.
