Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Has been thought to be closest to Principe Golden Weaver (Ploceus princeps).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

aurantius (Vieillot, 1805) - South-eastern Sierra Leone eastern along coast (including some offshore islets) to south-eastern Ghana, southern Togo and southern and south-eastern Nigeria, western and southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon (coast and Ivindo Basin), southern Central African Republic, PRCongo (mainly coast and R Congo region), coast and rivers in DRCongo (eastern discontinuously to upper Uele and Semliki Valley, and middle R Sankuru), and coastal northern Angola (Cabinda south to Luanda).
rex Neumann, 1908 - Southern Uganda, extreme western Kenya and north-western Tanzania in L Victoria basin.
