Subspecies
Often grouped with Black-necked Weaver (Ploceus nigricollis) and Spectacled Weaver (Ploceus ocularis) in a "spectacled weaver" superspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanogaster Shelley, 1887 - South-eastern Nigeria, south-western Cameroon and Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
stephanophorus (Sharpe, 1891) - Southern highlands of Sudan (Imatong, Dongotoma, Didinga, Acholi); eastern DRCongo and adjacent western Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi; and eastern Uganda and adjoining areas of west-central Kenya.
