Subspecies
Genus sometimes placed in sparrow family (Passeridae).
Proposed subspecies propinquatus (described from Baardheere, on R Jubba, in southern Somalia) is synonymized with melanorhynchus; terricolor (northern Namibia) included in ansorgei; stridens (eastern Tanzania) included in pectoralis; and stentor (from Northern Cape, in western South Africa) is treated as a synonym of nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
melanorhynchus Rüppell, 1845 - South-eastern Sudan, south-central Ethiopia, south-eastern Somalia, northern Uganda and Kenya.
ansorgei Hartert, 1907 - South-western Angola and northern Namibia.
pectoralis (Peters, W, 1868) - Northern and central Tanzania, southern and eastern Zambia, southern Malawi, western Mozambique (western Zambezi Valley), northern Zimbabwe and northern Botswana.
mahali Smith, 1836 - Southern Namibia, southern Botswana, south-western Zimbabwe and northern and central South Africa.
