Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Scaly-fronted Weaver (Sporopipes squamifrons).
Proposed subspecies pallidior (described from Zinder, in southern Niger) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
frontalis (Daudin, 1802) - South-western and south-eastern Mauritania, northern and western Senegal, Gambia, Mali (mainly drainage area of R Niger), north-western Burkina Faso, north-western Ghana (Mole region), northern Benin, west-central and southern Niger (including Aïr Massif) and northern Nigeria eastern in Sahel region to north-western Ethiopia and south-western Eritrea.
emini Neumann, 1900 - Southern Sudan, north-western and north-eastern Uganda and west-central Kenya south to central Tanzania.
