The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- wollastoni Ogilvie-Grant, 1913 - West-central New Guinea.
- rhododendri Mayr, 1931 - East-central New Guinea (in central highlands and Huon Peninsula).
- gutturalis De Vis, 1894 - South-eastern New Guinea.
